But here's a little something I've come up with.
Most of the people I spend time with, (AKA friends) have the following traits.
A.) have one or more subjects which they compulsively obsess over, often obscure in nature.
B.) generally are have a liberal waning
C.) intellectual
D.) enjoy independent art, cinema, and music

E.) would never admit to being a hipster, unless ironically so
These are all features that are quintessential to the hipster persona *. All these traits also describe my 56 year old father, which likely means I am missing a key ingredient.
So what is the "Special Sauce" needed to make the Hipster-Sandwich© have that signature volatile taste?

After meeting a 'real' hipster (oxymoronic, I know), I am left with a particular residue which only happen after having dealt with a jackass.
Perhaps what is meant when I say I hate hipsters, I mean I hate jerks, and who doesn't hate jerks?
*Note: not talking about "try-hards" aka. jocks and preps who jumped on the band wagon a little too late, and are perhaps, even worse then hipsters.
This is going to come off meaner than I probably mean it to be, but no other subculture of youth to my knowledge has been so self-conscious about what it is than "hipsters." I'm not sure if this is good or bad. Most things, from zoots, to beats, to hippies, to punks, to goths, to grunge, to ravers, to scene kids and many others I'm forgetting, are usually so smug in their ideals and fashion. While there's a part of my that is happy about hipsters' self-awareness, there's also a bit that's sort of annoying in the amount cultural narcissism on display. Like what you like because you like it. There's nothing wrong with that.

Grunge= flannel
Ravers= ecstasy, and neon/day-glow kids cloths
Hipsters= *whatever is on the fringe of becoming hip*
There for amorphous, meaning no distinguishing way to tell
I think that hipsters secretly love being hipsters. They remind me of neo beatniks. Also hipster is a reaction to the prescribed coolness of earlier groups. Everything is a reaction, and too much of anything is irritating. Posers of any sort are frustrating
